To summarize the past few months and catch everyone up to now, I'll briefly explain how I was able to do this.
I first heard about this teaching overseas thing last April or May when my sister said she had a friend who was going to teach in South Korea. "That's cool," I thought. "But why South Korea?" I got to thinking about it here and there, and eventually came up with my own answer. "Why not?"
I started seriously thinking about it in September. I thought about all of the pros and cons. Although they're different for each person, my pros were living and being immersed in another culture completely different from my own, traveling and getting to see the world, and being able to write about it. Some cons were leaving what I'm familiar with and flying. (I've never flown before.)
After thinking it through, and talking with some people who have traveled a lot, and talking with my sister's friend (and now my friend!), Amy, who currently lives in SoKo, I made the decision to go. Amy put me in contact with Lindsay at Say Kimchi Recruiting (see link above) and I started talking with her. The website is very informative, but she helped me through the process, too.
And I'm leaving in 2 weeks!
If you're thinking about doing this, or doing something similar, my advice is to think it through. I knew I wanted to do this because it's my chance to do something awesome that I'd better do now while I still can. I don't have anything holding me here, and I've always wanted to travel but never had the right opportunity. This is my opportunity. It took a little longer than I expected it to come along, but it's here now and excited is a word that just doesn't cut it.
I'm so excited for you to get here!! Let me know when you have an official date and I will plan a trip to come visit you in Gwangju!
