Australia, Day 4: Sydney, NSW and Cairns, Queensland

Day 4

I woke up this morning and was ready to check out of my hostel by about 9:20am, which was perfect because check out was 9:30. I had some tea from the free breakfast and then met my airport shuttle about 10am. I got to the airport 20 minutes later and checked in for my flight, and then checked things out until I boarded my flight to Cairns about 2pm. I know I got to the airport quite early, but if I would have gone and done more city exploring, I wouldn't have wanted to leave and would have ended up missing my flight.

My lunch is notable because it was very delish... Sumo Salads chicken Caesar salad wrap. $5.50 and very yum. Wonder if the shop is in America...

The flight was good, and Virgin Australia is a good airline. The plane was clean and the attendants were courteous. You had to pay for any food or snacks, but the flight was only about 2.5 hours so it wasn't really necessary to have a snack.

When I landed, I called for the free hostel shuttle and it took me right to it. It was sunny in Sydney, but was drizzly and overcast in Cairns, plus it was getting dark around 5:30p. (Australia is on daylight savings and it's now their fall season.) So I didn't see much of the ocean today. The hostel did give me a card for a free meal at a local restaurant, so I walked over to check it out. When I got there I kept  walking because it seemed like a college bar. Plus there was a line outside the door of 18-20 year olds. It wasn't the kind of place I wanted to enjoy a dinner at. Oh well. Instead, I walked and got the last of my souvenirs and then headed to the grocery, Woolworths. I never knew it was a grocery. I always just remember it from being a department store in old stories. Hmm. Interesting. It was a fun trip, though. Real chips, cookies, salads, etc. ...a real grocery! People probably thought I was crazy as I walked up and down the aisles smiling and giggling to myself. I had a great time.

Tomorrow is my reef trip, which hopefully wont be cancelled due to high winds. We'll see. Fingers crossed for lovely weather. If it is cancelled, I'll go to the Daintree Rainforest zoo and check that out. I want to see that anyway and hold a koala and feed the roos. Maybe I'll do that Saturday.

My room at the hostel is nice. I got a single, and it came with a full bed just like Sydney, but also a mini fridge and its own bathroom! That was a nice perk. Also a mobile clothes hanging apparatus. Another plus: first floor, no stairs. The downside: no tv. But who needs tv when you've got the ocean right outside?

Until next time!
