First Snow

I saw it snow today for the first time since I was a little girl.

I was on a ten-minute break between classes this evening when I stepped outside to get a snack from my favorite street vendor lady across the street. I walked through the door and went a few steps before I even realized it. There was white stuff floating in the sky. Is that snow? Is that what snow looks like?

The last time I saw snow fall, I was about five years old at home in Florida. I've seen snow in dirty piles on the ground in Washington DC, and supposedly it snowed last winter in Florida and it melted as it touched the ground, if you were awake for the one minute of it around 4am. I was not. But this evening it was snowing. It's even still snowing right now.

What's the big deal? It gets dirty and slushy and you can slip and fall. You have to shovel it out of the way to be able to drive on the streets and walk on the sidewalks. And in Korea where they don't salt it, it stays clean but doesn't go away, which makes it easier to slip and fall on the granite sidewalks and stairs in this vain country.

But it's snow. It's lovely and it's magical, and that's the only feeling I want.
