Today was the fourth class of my seven-week Saturday-only Korean class. To mark the occasion, I would like to share with you two photos of which I am very proud.
The first is my test from October 1, and the second is my test from October 8. Any scribbles you may see were made by me in the course of the test, not after. I studied very hard to get 100s on both tests.
Languages have been somewhat difficult for me in the past, but I guess what they say is true: living in the country makes learning the language much easier. I am by no means fluent, or even close to fluent, but I do believe that I am doing very well.
So, of course, I went shopping to celebrate my accomplishments and how proud I am of myself.
It's fun to be amused by the little things.
While I was in the store buying the cutest slippers in the eastern hemisphere, I ran into a lady who was from Canada, just passing through Korea for several days on vacation. She was so overwhelmed by how busy the city was and how crazy not knowing the language can make you, that she just wanted to speak to someone in English, if only for a minute. The brief encounter with a 'tourist' made me feel as though I am not. I really do live here. I have an apartment. I have a job. I take a taxi to buy groceries at Home Plus every now and then. I grab dinner at my favorite kimbap shop a few times a week. I have favorite places in Gwangju and in Korea. And I have ice cream in my freezer.
This is my home.
