So I had my first interview tonight via phone with South Korea. The job is teaching conversational English in a hogwon, which is kind of like a Sylvan Learning Center. Kids go to the hogwon after 'regular' school to study and learn more. The school is new, still under construction, but will be open in time for the new school year to start at the beginning of March. It's right in the heart of downtown Gwangju, one of the largest cities in South Korea, in the south west corner of the country about 30 miles from the west coast. The city even has its own international airport, so if I get it, hopefully I'll be able to land there, instead of in Seoul and taking a 3-4 hour cab ride to Gwangju.
The classes are 50 minutes long, and I'll (or whoever they choose) be teaching kids from age 6 to 16, separate classes of course. School starts at 2:30pm and goes until 8:30pm, which is great because apparently, South Koreans love their nightlife. So do I. And it's great because there will be other foreigners there like me with no one else to go out with, so we can all go together! :)
I taught myself how to say 'hello' - ana haa-say-o (think of the 'ana' with the little Spanish squiggle above the n), and I found a great website to teach myself phrases. It even has audio clips for pronunciation.
Either way, I should find out soon if they like me or if I need to schedule more interviews with other schools. Apparently it happens pretty fast. For my friend who is over there now, she interviewed at 1am EST and had an answer by the time she woke up the next morning. So, fingers crossed.
