I tried ice skating a few weeks ago. I even have proof of this. Check it out:
My legs look a bit odd. |
That's me with some friends in front of the outdoor ice skating rink in Gwangju. I did actually go on the ice. I did. Even though, when I say I 'went on the ice', I mean I went right on, shuffled for 10 minutes to the next exit 30 feet away, and exited the ice. And then I stood on the outside of the rink and watched my friends as they gracefully glided by.
I was terrified of falling and not being able to get back up because, well, the rink is SO PACKED with people that it's one of the rare times in Korea that reservations need to be made. I would say that on any given square yard of ice on the skate-able outside of the rink, there were at least 5 people. Except on the ends of the rink like the one behind us in the photo.
See?
See?
Even though I have come to loathe winter, winter sports, and generally all things winter, the experience of attempting to ice skate, and just being at the outdoor rink, was a fun one. I kept telling my friends that I had more fun standing on the outside wall watching them than I did being on the ice, but I don't think they believed me. It's true! That was way more fun for me than the terrifying visions of falling down and being run into by little kids and grown adults, much like it was when I tried skiing a few weeks ago.
Maybe I need the right teacher. Or any teacher. Or the opportunity to have a teacher. Or maybe I should just stick to sand, sun, and the ocean. I am a Florida Girl, after all.
