Australia, Day 1: Sydney, NSW

The following are the blogs that I wrote daily while in Australia. Internet fees weren't cheap, so I just kept writing with the intent to post them when I arrived back to normal, non-traveling conditions.

These are my adventures.

Day 1, Sydney

I landed about 8am, and when I claimed my bag and got my bus ticket from the concierge and finally left the airport, it was about 10am. I got to my hostel, Glebe Village in Glebe, just at 11am and checked in and had a shower. When I was ready, I got info on the bus and took bus 431 to Circular Quay (pronounced key) where I got the ferry from Wharf 3 to the suburb of Manly. The ferry took about 30 minutes, and when it docked I got off and did the Manly Scenic Walk and explored that area for about two hours. Then I caught the ferry back to Circular Quay and explored around the Sydney Opera House and took lots of pictures. I even had a Disaronno at the Opera Bar while looking out over the water. It was spectacular and so wonderful to actually be there and see the opera house and walk around it and be there. Before walking back to the bus, I stopped in a jewelry shop that advertized opals. I've always wanted an Australian Opal from Australia, so I popped in and had a look at the displays. The owner was very nice and well informed on opals, and I ended up buying a black opal ring in sterling silver and and a beautiful rhodium plated (so as not to tarnish) sterling silver opera house pendant necklace, also with black opal. So pretty! After that, I got the bus back to Glebe. When I arrived back in the hostel area, I saw a Subway restaurant and got off early to get my first meal in Australia. It sounds odd and so anti-climactic to eat a Subway sandwich as my first meal, but after not having had a proper sandwich in over a year, it was delicious. A real sandwich! Then I walked back tothe hostel, went to my room, ate it while watching tv, and was asleep before 9pm. Big day!!

My room is quite nice. Full bed, tv with stand, narrow desk, night stand with lamp, ceiling fan, wooden floors in a beautiful old Victorian house. The whole hostel is nice. Except I'm not a fan of the shared bathrooms. So pretty though. And I like this Glebe area. Very me.
